Breast Reduction Q & A

When should I consider breast reduction?

Consider breast reduction surgery if you have very large and heavy breasts that cause neck, back, or shoulder pain, or if they are out of proportion with the rest of your body. During breast reduction, Dr. Sirota removes excess breast tissue, fat, and skin, improving size, shape, and symmetry.

Dr. Sirota recommends waiting for breast reduction surgery until your breast size and weight are stable. He performs the procedure for all ages, including those as young as 15.

If you smoke, Dr. Sirota recommends quitting before surgery. Smoking reduces circulation to the breast tissue, which can delay healing and increase the risk of complications that require corrective surgery.

What happens during breast reduction?

Dr. Sirota personalizes your breast reduction surgical plan based on your body shape and breast size and your personal goals. He chooses the most appropriate method to reduce the size of your breasts.

Breast reduction methods include:

Anchor scar pattern

The anchor scar pattern requires three incisions, one around the areola, one extending vertically down the center of the breast to the crease of the breast, and one in the crease. Dr. Sirota uses this method to remove a lot of tissue.

Vertical scar pattern

The vertical scar pattern involves an incision around the areola and an incision that runs vertically from the areola to the breast crease. Dr. Sirota uses this technique if you need moderate breast reduction.

He performs breast reduction at an outpatient surgical center or the hospital of your choice. You’re given a general anesthetic, so you’re asleep during surgery. The procedure takes about three hours.

How long does it take to recover from breast reduction?

Recovery after breast reduction varies, but most people return to light activities (like a desk job) within a week. Dr. Sirota recommends wearing a front-opening surgical bra during recovery and avoiding underwire bras for at least six weeks.

He also suggests waiting six weeks before engaging in strenuous physical activity.

Breast reduction surgery is a life-changing experience for many, improving their physical and emotional well-being.
