Tummy Tuck Q & A

I want flat abs. Should I consider a tummy tuck?

The goal of a tummy tuck, also called abdominoplasty, is to flatten the abs and improve the contours of the waist. If you have excess belly fat or loose abdominal skin and diet and exercise aren’t helping, you might want to consider a tummy tuck.

After pregnancy, many women struggle to get their pre-pregnancy body back. Pregnancy can overstretch the abdominal skin and cause umbilical (bellybutton) hernias. It can also separate the abdominal muscles. These post-pregnancy body changes can’t be fixed with diet and exercise.

You might also consider a tummy tuck if you’ve lost significant weight and have excess abdominal skin.

Dr. Sirota will talk to you about the tummy tuck and help you decide if it is the right procedure to help you reach your beauty goals. Tummy tuck candidates are in good overall health, at their ideal body weight, and have realistic expectations about what the procedure can accomplish.

Women should hold off having a tummy tuck if they intend to have more children.

What happens during a tummy tuck?

Dr. Sirota personalizes your tummy tuck so that you get the results you want. In some cases, Dr. Sirota will only need to perform liposuction to remove excess body fat and improve the shape and contours of the waist.

To remove excess skin and tighten abdominal muscles, Dr. Sirota will perform either a mini tummy tuck or a complete tummy tuck.

Mini tummy tuck

For a mini tummy tuck, Dr. Sirota makes a single incision in the lower abdominal area, tightens the muscles, and removes excess skin.

Complete tummy tuck

For this procedure, Dr. Sirota makes a larger incision in the lower abdominal area to tighten the muscles and remove excess skin. He might also use liposuction to remove unwanted fat from the waist and back.

He might then make a second incision around the navel (belly button) to remove excess skin in the upper abdominal area.

How long is recovery from a tummy tuck?

Recovery following a tummy tuck depends on how complex your surgery was. You might be able to resume most of your usual activities within a week following liposuction. But it can take up to six weeks to recover from a mini or complete tummy tuck.

Dr. Sirota recommends not driving or flying during the first two weeks of your recovery.
